Louis Armstrong

In 1957, Arkansas Governor, Orval Faubus, used the National Guard to deny nine Black students entry into a school. This was after the Supreme Court ruled against segregation. Then-president Eisenhower responded by advising Faubus not to go against the court’s decision. The lack of action didn’t go down well with activists or Louis Armstrong. He penned a letter to Eisenhower, slamming him for his imprudent, avoidant response.

Elvis Presley

It’s challenging, if not impossible, to find someone who’s never heard of Elvis Presley. Known as the King of Rock and Roll, Elvis blended musical styles and introduced a new sound to mainstream audiences.

Bob Dylan

After the release of his second studio album, The Freewheelin’ Bob Dylan, under Columbia Records in 1963, Bob Dylan’s folk music career began. His songs, including Blowin’ in the Wind and A Hard Rain’s a-Gonna Fall, gained early success among the folk music community.

Considered one of the greatest songwriters of all time, Dylan’s lyrics touched on social, political, and philosophical issues. This was unconventional for popular music at the time. Prior to his emergence as a rock legend, no one had incorporated feedback, fuzz, and pedal distortion into their performances. Hendrix’s signature style essentially led to a brand-new form of music.

He was iconic in other ways, too, which included playing his Fender Stratocaster upside-down—though not in the way people thought. He was left-handed, and since left-handed guitars were rare, he strung his right-handed guitar like a left-handed model. So, while the guitar was technically upside down, the strings still ascended and descended like a standard guitar.

Although the feat wasn’t as remarkable as it looked, Hendrix did play the guitar in a unique way. He utilised a blues technique where he used the thumb to play bass while the other fingers played voicings. You can hear this in his song, The Wind Cries Mary, as well as several others. 

His versatility and signature style inspired other famous musicians, including Prince, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and John Mayer.

Bob Marley

In 1963, Marley founded The Wailers along with Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer. The band made music that inspired people to support and embrace Rastafarianism and its culture. The theme behind their music also stand up and fight for moral issues.

Marley gained fame during his time with The Wailers. However, it wasn’t until after the band’s breakup that Marley achieved stardom in the States as a solo artist. This came after Eric Clapton performed a cover of his song, I Shot the Sheriff.

The Jackson 5 enjoyed a successful reign in the industry, but by the 1970s, Michael went solo. In 1979, he released the album Off the Wall. The single, Don’t Stop ‘Til You Get Enough, introduced him to the world as a solo artist.
