Human rights refer to the fundamental rights and freedoms that every person is entitled to, simply by virtue of being human. These rights are based on the principles of dignity, equality, and respect, and are universal and inalienable. Human rights include civil, political, economic, social, and cultural rights, such as the right to life, liberty, and security of person; freedom of speech, religion, and assembly; the right to work, education, and healthcare; and protection from discrimination, torture, and arbitrary arrest. Human rights are enshrined in international treaties and declarations, such as the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, and they are protected by national and international laws and institutions.

We have a responsibility to protect the rights of all humans. The image above is an example of gross negligence.

It shows a Syrian refugee holding a baby in a refugee camp in the town of Harmanli, South-East of Sofia on November 12, 2013. Bulgaria’s asylum centres were severely overcrowded after the arrival of almost 10,000 refugees that year, half of them Syrian. The influx fuelled anti-immigrant sentiment in a country already struggling with dire poverty.

A photo of a large crowd of people with their hands raised in the air. There are multiple flags, including the American flag, being heldup by the crowd. The background contains a building with the words "Save Democracy" written in large letters.
