Category: Human Rights – Concepts

Human rights concepts encompass a range of fundamental principles and values aimed at ensuring the inherent dignity, equality, and freedom of every individual. Some key human rights concepts include:

  1. Universality: Human rights apply to all individuals, regardless of their nationality, ethnicity, gender, religion, or any other characteristic.
  2. Inalienability: Human rights are inherent to all human beings and cannot be taken away or relinquished.
  3. Equality: All individuals are entitled to equal rights and opportunities without discrimination.
  4. Non-discrimination: Human rights should be upheld without distinction based on race, colour, sex, language, religion, political or other opinion, national or social origin, property, birth, or other status.
  5. Human dignity: Every person possesses inherent dignity and should be treated with respect and without degrading or inhumane treatment.
  6. Freedom: Human rights include civil liberties and freedoms such as freedom of speech, assembly, religion, and association.
  7. Rule of law: Human rights are best protected when there is a just and accountable legal system that upholds the principles of fairness, justice, and due process.
  8. Accountability: States and other entities have a responsibility to respect, protect, and fulfill human rights and should be held accountable for any violations.
  9. Participation: Individuals should have the right to participate in decision-making processes that affect their lives and communities.
  10. Progressive realization: Governments have an obligation to take steps, within their available resources, to progressively realise and fulfill human rights over time.
