author2author (HELP FOR SELF-PUBLISHERS)

These days, authors are expected to do a lot more to market their books. This means developing a strong on-line presence with an appealing author site to draw in the crowds and regular engagement with potential readers through blogging and social networking. Not everyone has the time, the inclination or the skill to set the wheels in motion. Author Jack Scott has been there, done that and built up an impressive social network to promote his own books. Let Jack take the worry out of the web. He can build a fully integrated website, blog, Facebook page and Twitter page for you. He can even produce a short book trailer to add a little Hollywood sparkle to your words. All Jack’s packages are offered at an affordable fixed price. Are we capable of original thought?

English: Sam Harris

Sam Harris, the neuroscientist and author describes ‘Freewill’ as an illusion. He uses brilliant analogies to explain that acting of your own freewill implies that you could have done otherwise. He poses the question, ‘What are you going to think next? Your next thought comes out of nowhere. Whatever you are doing you have a voice in your head which just says things. Thoughts just emerge in consciousness. We can’t choose them before we think them. So if you can’t control your next thought where is your freedom of will?’ Continue reading Are we capable of original thought?

As a fledgling author it is a pleasant feeling when someone comments favourably that they enjoyed your book. It is OK if they say, it isn’t bad but I didn’t like this or that. But it is extremely unpleasant if they say it is a load of rubbish. Continue reading What is a book review?

How to get published without financial pain.

First book complete? – Which way now? – Sound familiar?

Published!
Published! (Photo credit: JoshuaDavisPhotography)

What flummoxed me when I researched the options for self-publishing was that the self-publishing outfits themselves expect new kids on the block to have a complete grasp of how the publishing world operates. They say ‘Here are the zillion, all-singing, all-dancing products we produce; this is what it costs; now you choose what you need.’ But the fledgeling authors have no more idea as to what they need (other than help!) than the man in the moon. Now that’s off my chest, what the hell can we do to get started and avoid total disappointment? Continue reading How to get published without financial pain.
