Then I spent more and more time ploughing through posts and commenting on other bloggers work. I started out full of enthusiasm, I read and listened to all the experts. It wasn&#8217;t long before I was overwhelmed, my in-box overflowing, out of control and overwhelmed. It seemed I was working for charity \u2014 full-time and unpaid. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I knew it shouldn\u2019t be like that so I took a rain check, posting what and when I wanted to and <a href=\"https:\/\/jamoroki.com\/authorindie\/encourage-comments-on-your-blog\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">commenting on other blogs <\/a>when I had time. I have done this several times. If I don\u2019t I may close my blog altogether. Life is too short!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-i-wrote-this-post\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_I_Wrote_this_Blog_Post\"><\/span>Why I Wrote this Blog Post.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">I was motivated to write this post in support of all those bloggers who have been through or are in the middle of a similar crisis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><strong>If you don\u2019t know how to improve your blog, and it isn\u2019t fun anymore, don\u2019t despair. You don\u2019t have to throw in the towel. Answer one simple question. <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><strong><em><u>Was it ever fun, and was there any benefit in it for me?<\/u><\/em> <\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">If the answer is yes, read on to find how you can take back control and have fun again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-why-did-you-start-a-blog\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Why_Did_You_Start_Writing_Blog_Content\"><\/span>Why Did You Start Writing Blog Content?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Turn the clock back and investigate your motivation for starting a blog in the first place. Don\u2019t pussyfoot around. The answer is important even if you don\u2019t like the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Was it a whim, like it was for me. Yes, I started a blog without any purpose, other than it might be fun. And it was for a while, writing about anything that took my fancy. But it was unstructured and I had no idea what a Topical Map was. So, it was not sustainable. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Later, I realised the subject matter of most of my articles fell neatly into Arts and Humanities. I had, by accident, found a purpose and was able to channel and develop it into something meaningful. It took a longer and there were many breaks but I recognised there was value in it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">When you know why you started a blog, and you have a purpose, the next big question is &#8211;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-do-you-need-a-blog-and-do-you-know-how-to-get-visitors-to-your-blog\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"How_to_Promote_Your_Blog\"><\/span>How to Promote Your Blog?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Let\u2019s assume there is a good reason. You may need a blog to help build your business website, or like me you want to write about subjects you are passionate about. Music, Dance or Theatre for example. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">If you have a random Blog already, rather than start again, take a critical look at the content to see if there is value and if any of it is a fit for your new purpose. And then think about how to attract visitors so you can build a subscriber&#8217;s list. Otherwise start a new one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">When I discovered my purpose, I trashed 200 out of 300 posts. It hurt like hell, but I felt much better when I realised not many people start a new blog with a hundred posts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Be clear on your purpose before moving forward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">If you are an author, a blog is a great way to drive traffic to your author website and introduce people to your books.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">If blogging is your bag, focus on a topic, write or re-engineer 30+ existing posts and begin the process of building it out into what may become a viable business. I regularly clean-up posts and do re-writes from time to time. Things change constantly and I have modified my views on blogging and social media many times. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\"><strong>If you are change averse &#8211; STOP NOW. Blogging is ever evolving.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">When I do a periodic assessment, I re-affirm the reasons why I blog. At the start, the reason was I love writing, and blogging gave me the opportunity to improve and share my thoughts and interests with others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Later it helped others to get to know me and maybe read my fiction books. Then it became a means to earn through monetisation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">All that was impossible when I was a young man. There was no internet, and no such thing as a Blog until 1994 when <strong>Justin Hall created the first blog on Links.net.<\/strong> Sharing knowledge and information is now an everyday occurrence.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">We all have our reasons to blog and they vary greatly. They are part of life and if you don&#8217;t have a problem when blogging you will be unique. Even expereinced bloggers have problems.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you are like Miriam you are normal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">In my case, the problem was not severe. But I wasn&#8217;t enjoying blogging much, mainly because it was taking too much of my time. Time I wanted to write fiction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Like millions of others, I was sucked into the vortex, the <strong>&#8216;social media&#8217;<\/strong>&nbsp;cum <strong>&#8216;promotion&#8217;<\/strong> cum <strong>&#8216;marketing your blog&#8217;<\/strong> trap. I was desperate to know how to get <em><u>thousands of followers<\/u><\/em>. Then I found out it was much harder than I thought.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">I\u2019m sure you know the stuff I&#8217;m talking about. The stuff that sucks hours out of every day, and before you know what\u2019s happened your Blog is running you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">It can feel like a &#8216;chain letter&#8217; sometimes. And you could be forgiven for thinking, all you need to do to make a fortune is send $10 to the person at the top of the list, put your name at the bottom and send the letter to 10 people and ask them to do the same. In 4 weeks you won&#8217;t have enough room for all the money you are receiving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">When I realised my Blog was running me, I had to do something about it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-is-facebook-necessary\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Is_Facebook_Necessary\"><\/span>Is Facebook Necessary?<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">I had a dodgy experience and wrote a post about&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/jamoroki.com\/authorindie\/cross-facebook-at-your-peril\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">&nbsp;Facebook<\/a>. Would I have joined to subject myself to the mindless \u2018tittle-tattle\u2019 daily, just for social reasons? An emphatic NO. I have, but I don&#8217;t spend any real time on it.&nbsp;So why did I join? Because when I started blogging, <strong><em>I believed<\/em><\/strong> what I was told and that it was crucial to do so. I have a social media presence, but I only use it selectively. A Facebook page and selective community sites are useful for authors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"The_Danger_of_Over-reliance_on_Google\"><\/span>The Danger of Over-reliance on Google<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Google&#8217;s algorithm changes have been known to negatively impact small blogs, leading to a decrease in traffic. This is evident from the discussions on Reddit and YouTube, where bloggers have shared their experiences of significant drops in traffic following algorithm updates. For instance, the <strong>Niche Pursuits<\/strong> YouTube video <a aria-label=\"&quot;Google is Slowly Killing Blogging,&quot; (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=n2L7FZNPpa0&amp;t=1s\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">&#8220;Google is Slowly Killing Blogging,&#8221;<\/a> mentions that many established bloggers lost up to 50% or more of their traffic from Google with the March 2024 helpful content update.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>\u00a0Similarly, in the Reddit thread <strong>&#8220;To Hell with Google and Its Algorithm,<\/strong>&#8221; bloggers share their frustrations with the impact of algorithm changes on their traffic, with some reporting losses of up to 60%.\u00a0These accounts suggest that Google&#8217;s algorithm updates can disproportionately affect small blogs, making it challenging for them to maintain traffic levels.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong><em>Tip &#8211; Spread the word across a selection of media that supports your type of content. Twitter and Facebook reach so many people it may be worth using them. But bear in mind they aren&#8217;t keen on sending traffic to bloggers. It read (<em>not verbatim<\/em>);<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8216;Many people fall into the trap of writing more and more creative, informative and interesting posts instead of spending their time marketing and getting more followers.&#8217;<\/em><\/p>\n<cite>Unknown<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">The writer went on to say (again not verbatim), <\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p><em>&#8216;if you don&#8217;t follow this advice you are effectively wasting your time.&#8217;<\/em> <\/p>\n<cite>Unknown<\/cite><\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">But he did not say who should take his advice. Maybe it wasn&#8217;t in his interests to do so.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">I was a greenhorn then, but even so, it didn\u2019t seem to be good advice. Now I know it is downright bad advice.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-quality-content-is-a-writer-s-stock-in-trade-without-it-you-have-nothing\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Without_Quality_Content_Blogs_are_Nothing\"><\/span> Without Quality Content Blogs are Nothing.<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Imagine telling Renoir to stop painting after one creation, \u00a0saying; &#8216;get on your bike and keep cycling around the town until someone buys your painting, then you can paint another.&#8217;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Or suggesting to Irving Berlin he should retire after composing White Christmas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Ridiculous isn&#8217;t it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\" id=\"h-how-to-be-a-better-blogger-is-not-straightforward\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Best_Blogs_Have_a_Great_Content_Strategy\"><\/span>Best Blogs Have a Great Content Strategy<span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">There are too many factors that go towards making a blog successful to include in this post. As I wrote in this post, <a href=\"http:\/\/jamoroki.com\/authorindie\/consistently-produce-quality-blog-content\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">consistently produce quality blog content<\/a> and you will be well on the way to becoming a better blogger and creating a successful blog. But every successful blog will have a great <a aria-label=\"content strategy (opens in a new tab)\" href=\"https:\/\/www.semrush.com\/blog\/content-marketing-strategy-guide\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\" class=\"ek-link\">content strategy<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Since I started blogging in 2013, I have modified my thinking as my blog evolves. That will always happen.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Success means different things to different people. For a long time, my Blog was a hobby, not a business. I love, observing, researching, recounting experiences and writing about things that interest me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">If people find my blog and enjoy what I am doing that&#8217;s a real bonus, but firstly <strong><em>I must enjoy what I do. I must have fun, do it my way&nbsp;<\/em><\/strong>and be satisfied that it meets my standards. That is success for me. Any financial benefit that may accrue is a by-product.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Even as I focus more on selling books, my feelings haven&#8217;t changed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">You need time to learn how to be a better blogger and how to grow your wordpress blog. It doesn&#8217;t stop and there&nbsp; is no secret sauce.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">It&#8217;s a continual process of trial and error. And by now you should know where your content marketing is going, and I hope I have been able to show you how you can regain control and make blogging fun again. That&#8217;s if it isn&#8217;t already, of course.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Quality content must be the priority for any serious blogger. And learning how to produce will depend on your experience and dedication to learning the art.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Without good content, there is no foundation for communication and appreciation of your work. So it has to be the first thing on the agenda. If you bring social media to the fore you will be putting the cart before the horse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">Aggressive promotion of second-rate content will not fill you or your readers with joy. Nor will it impress the search engines you use, rank for SEO or bring you traffic to help sell books and monetise your efforts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-justify\">You will work out how to improve your blog if you manage it efficiently, identify problems and rectify them quickly.
