ATHENS – The Acropolis

Visiting the Acropolis in 2005 was the fulfilment of a lifelong dream I had, ever since I studied Ancient Greek architecture as a schoolboy. I remember how hot it was on that June day and the walk from ground level to the entrance would be tiring on a cool day. Then the steep steps up to the entrance portal left me breathless for a moment. But soon my discomfort was replaced by awe as I walked out of the rear of the entrance and saw the mighty Parthenon looking down on the City of Athens from the pinnacle of the Acropolis. Even in the constant process of restoration the impression on me was just as I had always imagined it would be; breathtaking.
